Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) New detections in California - Be Bio-secure
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) New detections in California - Be Bio-secure
Dr. Sarah Mize from CCFA informed me today that HPAI is being detected in wild geese. Two of these detections have come from Sacramento County and 4 from a Sonoma county bird rescue center.
Of concern to all is a detection in a backyard flock. Owners did have a pond on their property and had seen migratory waterfowl. While the location has yet to be disclosed, I can say that it is NOT one of our remote mountain counties.
Both Dr. Mize and I are urging all of you to check your biosecurity plans. Are you birds confined? Is there a SOLID cover over them at all times? Have you inspected your poultry houses and sealed areas where rats, mice, and squirrels might enter? All of those creatures can bring the HPAI virus to your birds.
